A heartfelt prayer
The story of Hannah and Samuel, found in 1 Samuel chapters 1 and 2, begins during a time when the people of Israel often turned away from God. In the midst of this spiritual dryness, we meet Hannah, a woman deeply devoted to the Lord but burdened by her inability to have children.
Hannah was married to Elkanah, who loved her dearly. However, Elkanah’s other wife, Peninnah, had children and often mocked Hannah for her barrenness, causing her great sorrow. Every year, Elkanah took his family to Shiloh to worship and offer sacrifices to the Lord. During one of these visits, Hannah went to the temple and poured out her heart to God, weeping and praying silently. She made a vow: “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me… then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life.” (1 Samuel 1:11)
Eli the priest observed her praying and, at first, misunderstood her silent prayer for drunkenness. But when Hannah explained her deep anguish and her petition to God, Eli told her to go in peace and assured her that God would grant her request.
An answered prayer
In time, Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son, Samuel, whose name means “heard by God.” True to her word, after weaning him, Hannah brought Samuel back to the temple and dedicated him to the Lord’s service. She presented him to Eli and said, “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord.”
Hannah didn’t respond with bitterness or sadness, she worshiped God joyfully, praising Him in a beautiful prayer found in 1 Samuel 2:1–10. Her words reflect trust in God’s justice, and an understanding of His power to uplift the humble and bring down the proud.
Samuel grew up in the temple under Eli’s care and would later become one of Israel’s greatest prophets and leaders. Even as a child, he served God faithfully, laying the foundation for his future role in guiding the nation of Israel.
This powerful story reminds us that God hears our prayers, even when they come from a place of sorrow, and that He can bring great blessings through those who dedicate their lives to Him.
