Bible Story Summary
The story of Ruth and Naomi is found in the Book of Ruth, a short yet powerful account that highlights loyalty, selfless love, and God’s providence.
During a time of famine in Israel, a woman named Naomi, her husband Elimelech, and their two sons move to the land of Moab seeking food. While in Moab, the sons marry Moabite women: Ruth and Orpah. Sadly, tragedy strikes when Elimelech and both sons die, leaving Naomi and her daughters-in-law as widows.
Grieving and feeling alone, Naomi decides to return to her homeland of Bethlehem after hearing that the Lord had blessed His people with food again. She encourages Ruth and Orpah to remain in Moab and rebuild their lives. Orpah says goodbye with tears, but Ruth refuses to leave Naomi, declaring her unwavering loyalty with these famous words:
“Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16).
Upon arriving in Bethlehem, Ruth offers to glean leftover grain in the fields to provide for herself and Naomi. By God’s providence, she finds herself working in the field of Boaz, a relative of Elimelech. Boaz is moved by Ruth’s faithfulness and hard work and shows her kindness, protection, and generosity.
Following Naomi’s wise guidance, Ruth humbly approaches Boaz as a kinsman-redeemer, a cultural tradition that allowed a close relative to marry a widow to preserve the family line. Boaz honors this request with integrity and marries Ruth.
The story ends with the joyful birth of a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David, and ultimately, an ancestor of Jesus. What began as a story of sorrow and loss is transformed into one of restoration, hope, and redemption.
