Conquering the Promised Land with Courage and Faith

Bible Story Summary (Selections from the Book of Joshua)
1. Conquering the Land City by City
After the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River, the Israelites began the conquest of Canaan. City by city, they followed God’s instructions and trusted His power. From Jericho’s mighty walls crumbling to strategic victories across the land, God led His people through battle after battle.
2. Joshua Prays and the Sun Stands Still
During a key battle against five Amorite kings (Joshua 10), Joshua asked God to make the sun stand still so the Israelites could complete the victory. God answered his prayer, and the sun stopped in the sky! This miraculous moment shows that nothing is too hard for God.
3. Caleb’s Faith at Hebron
Though many years had passed since Caleb first spied out the land, his faith had not faded. At 85 years old, he asked Joshua to give him Mount Hebron, a land still filled with strong enemies. Caleb said, “I’m just as strong now as I was then.” With God’s help, Caleb conquered the land, just as God had promised.
4. Joshua’s Farewell Speech
As Joshua neared the end of his life, he reminded the Israelites of all God had done. He urged them to follow the Lord wholeheartedly and choose to serve Him faithfully. His powerful words still echo today:
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

- DIY Sundial: Cut out the sundial. Glue it to a plate or a piece of cardboard. Stick a pencil as straight as you can in the center of the sundial. Put the sundial under the sun. When it is an hour on the dot, position the sundial so that the shadow of the pencil indicates the exact time (eg 10:00 a.m.). Observe how the shadow moves on the sundial during the day and have fun.
- Hebron Mountain Challenge: Build “mountains” with blocks or pillows and let kids climb them, symbolizing Caleb’s courageous request.
- Strong and Courageous Award: Print Strong and Brave certificates for the children, and allow each one to tell a story about where they were strong and brave (Example: when they got an injection, when they had to say goodbye to someone they loved, etc.)
- Reflection Time: Ask kids to think of something hard they are facing, and pray like Joshua did.
