Introduction: Try This!
Start by creating a fun obstacle course using pillows, chairs, or toys. Have the kids try to cross without touching the ground. Then, clear a path and let them walk straight through. Talk about how God made a way for the Israelites when there seemed to be no way!

Bible Story Summary (Exodus 13:17–22; 14)
When Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, they were finally free from being slaves! But they didn’t take the shortest road. God guided them through the desert because He knew what was best for them. He went before them as a cloud during the day and a fire at night so they could follow Him.
Soon, Pharaoh changed his mind. He wanted the Israelites back! So he gathered his army and chased after them. The Israelites were trapped between the Red Sea and the Egyptian army. They were scared and didn’t know what to do.
Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid! Stand still and see how God will save you.” Then God told Moses to lift his staff over the sea. When he did, something amazing happened, God made the waters part, and a path opened up right through the middle!
The Israelites walked across on dry land with walls of water on both sides! Once they were safe, God let the sea return to normal, and the Egyptian army couldn’t follow them anymore.
The people were safe. They were free. And they knew that God was strong and faithful. They sang songs of praise and thanked God for rescuing them.
Faith-Building Lessons from the Story
- God Makes a Way: Even when it seems like there is no solution, God can do miracles. (Exodus 14:21–22)
- We Can Trust God in Scary Times: God told the Israelites not to be afraid. We can trust Him too. (Exodus 14:13–14)

Ideas for Teaching the Lesson
- Fun and engaging worksheets: Use worksheets that promote learning and independent work.
- Water in a Bag Object Lesson: Fill a zip-lock bag with blue-tinted water. Poke a pencil through both sides, it won’t leak! Talk about how God held back the water and kept it in place.
- Board game: Use Bible characters as tokens to play this game, where the goal is for everyone to make it across the sea. You can use a die or a wheel to determine how many spaces you must advance.
- Dramatic Retelling: Act out the story with scarves or blue sheets for the water, and have kids march through as the Israelites.
- Song Time: Sing a praise song like “My God is So Big” to celebrate God’s power.
