Introductory Activity
Activity: “Remembering Special Events” Discussion
Ask the children: Have you ever celebrated something really special, like a birthday or holiday? Why do we remember those days?
Introduce the idea that in today’s Bible story, God gave His people a very important way to remember what He did for them—the very first Passover.
Memory Verse
“The blood will be a sign for you… and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.” Exodus 12:13a (NIV)
This verse teaches children that God sees and protects those who trust in Him.
Bible Story (Exodus 12)
The Israelites had been slaves in Egypt for a long time. Even though God had sent many plagues, Pharaoh still would not let them go. So God told Moses that He would send one final plague: the death of the firstborn.
But God gave the Israelites special instructions to keep them safe. Each family was to take a perfect lamb, kill it, and place its blood on the doorposts of their home. That night, when the Lord saw the blood, He would pass over their house and keep them safe.
God also told them to eat a special meal with the lamb, bitter herbs, and bread without yeast. They were to eat it quickly and be ready to leave Egypt!
Just as God said, the plague came, and Pharaoh finally told the Israelites to go. God had rescued His people! From then on, the Israelites celebrated the Passover every year to remember how God saved them with love and power.
The Passover was not only a rescue story, it was a picture of how God saves us, too. It points forward to Jesus, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
