“Who Would You Choose?”
Show pictures of people with different appearances or professions (like a firefighter, athlete, or child). Ask the kids which person they would choose as a leader and why. Then explain how our choices are often based on appearance, but God looks at the heart. This sets the stage for understanding why God chose David.
Memory Verse
1 Samuel 16:7b (NIV):
“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Bible Story Summary
God had rejected Saul as king of Israel because of his disobedience. He sent the prophet Samuel to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse, to anoint the next king. Samuel met Jesse’s older sons, and though they looked strong and capable, God told Samuel not to judge by appearances, He looks at the heart.
Finally, they called the youngest son, David, who was out in the fields tending sheep. Though he was not the biggest or strongest, God chose David because of his faithful heart. Samuel anointed him with oil, and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord was with David.
Later, when David volunteered to face Goliath, he told King Saul how God had helped him defeat both a lion and a bear while protecting his sheep (1 Samuel 17:34–37). David trusted God completely, and his faith grew stronger through his humble service.

- Lamb Craft: Have the children make a sheep with the message: “God looks at the heart.”
- Dramatic Play: Act out the scene where Samuel anoints David. Emphasize how God’s choice surprised everyone and how God looks beyond appearances.
