Introduction: Try this!
Begin by asking the children: “Have you ever been the only one standing up for what’s right?”
Activity Idea: Play a simple “Fire or Water” game: call out scenarios, and children decide if they are “Fire” (bold) or “Water” (fearful). Explain that today we’ll learn about someone who stood boldly for God—even when he was alone!
Introduce the story of Elijah, a prophet who trusted God when everyone else followed false gods.
Memory Verse
1 Kings 18:39b (NIV):
“The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”
Practice saying the verse loudly together to celebrate God’s victory, just like the people did on Mount Carmel!
Bible Story Summary: Elijah and the Prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18)
The people of Israel had turned away from God, following a false god named Baal because of the wicked King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. God sent Elijah to challenge this. Elijah bravely stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel.
Elijah proposed a test: both he and the prophets would prepare sacrifices, but without lighting them. They would each pray to their god, and the true God would send fire from heaven.
The prophets of Baal prayed all day. They shouted, danced, and even hurt themselves trying to get Baal to answer, but nothing happened. Elijah even teased them, saying maybe Baal was sleeping or busy!
When it was Elijah’s turn, he built an altar, drenched it with water three times to make it even harder, and then prayed a simple prayer to God. Immediately, fire from heaven came down and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water!
The people were amazed and fell to the ground, shouting, “The Lord—he is God!” Elijah showed everyone that God is real and powerful.
Lessons from the Story:
- There is only one true God: No other gods or idols have power like the Lord.
- God answers sincere prayers: Elijah didn’t need fancy tricks, he simply trusted God.
- Be bold for God: Even when we feel alone, standing for God makes a difference.
Creative Ways to Teach This Lesson:
- Fun and engaging worksheets: Use worksheets that promote learning and independent work.
- Building an Altar: Have the children make a craft where fire descends on the altar.
- Fire from Heaven Craft: Use red, orange, and yellow tissue paper to create a “fire” collage over an altar made of craft sticks.
- Act It Out: Reenact the story, letting some kids pretend to be the prophets of Baal while one child plays Elijah.
- Prayer Station: Set up a quiet spot where kids can write or draw simple prayers, learning to trust God just like Elijah did.
Closing Encouragement
Remind children that no matter how alone they may feel, God is always with them. Like Elijah, they can be brave and trust that God’s power is real and strong.

“Dear God, help us to be brave like Elijah. Teach us to trust in Your power and stand for You, even when it’s hard. Amen.”
