Introduction: Try this!
Ask the children: “Have you ever felt scared or all alone?”
Activity Idea: Play a “Listening Game” where children close their eyes and guess different sounds (like a bell, a whisper, or tapping). Explain that sometimes the most important things are heard when we are very still and quiet, just like Elijah experienced on Mount Horeb!
Introduce today’s lesson about a time when Elijah needed to hear from God in a very special way.
Memory Verse
1 Kings 19:12b (NIV):
“And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
Practice saying the verse together in a soft whisper to help children feel the peacefulness of God’s voice.
Bible Story Summary (1 Kings 19)
After Elijah’s great victory against the prophets of Baal, Queen Jezebel was furious and threatened to kill him. Elijah was afraid and ran away into the wilderness. He felt exhausted, scared, and completely alone.
Elijah sat under a tree and prayed that he might die. But God didn’t leave him there. An angel came and brought him food and water, giving him strength. Elijah then traveled for forty days and nights to Mount Horeb, also known as the Mountain of God.
There, Elijah hid in a cave. God asked him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah shared his fears and loneliness, thinking he was the only one left who loved God.
God told Elijah to stand on the mountain because He was about to pass by. A powerful wind tore through the mountains, but God was not in the wind. Then there was a great earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake. After that, there was a fire, but God was not in the fire.
Finally, Elijah heard a still, small voice, and that’s where he found God’s presence.
Through this experience, Elijah learned that God doesn’t always show His power through big, loud events. Sometimes, God speaks softly and lovingly, and we must be still and listen closely.
God comforted Elijah, reminded him he was not alone, and gave him new instructions and purpose.
