Learning Objectives

Introduction
Ask the children: “Have you ever had to help fix something that was broken?”
Activity Idea: Set up a simple “fix it” challenge where kids repair a torn paper or simple puzzle, and talk about how Ezra helped fix the people’s relationship with God by teaching them His Word.

“For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.”
Bible Story Summary
Many years before Ezra’s time, the people of Judah were taken into exile in Babylon because they had disobeyed God. But God, in His mercy, had a plan to bring them back. After 70 years in exile, the return began.
There were three major groups of exiles who returned to Jerusalem:
- Zerubbabel led the first group around 538 B.C. They rebuilt the temple (Ezra 1–6).
- Ezra led the second group around 458 B.C. His mission was to teach God’s Law and help the people follow it again (Ezra 7–10).
- Nehemiah led the third group around 445 B.C. and rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem (Book of Nehemiah).
Ezra was not a warrior or a king. He was a teacher, a man who studied the Scriptures carefully. He loved learning about God, obeying His commands, and helping others understand them too.
When Ezra arrived in Jerusalem, he saw that many of the people had forgotten God’s laws. They were living in ways that were not pleasing to the Lord. Ezra’s heart was broken. He prayed, confessed the people’s sins, and worked hard to teach them God’s ways again.
Thanks to Ezra’s leadership, many people repented and decided to follow God faithfully. Ezra showed that true leadership starts with knowing God’s Word and living it out!

- Fun and engaging worksheets: Use worksheets that promote learning and independent work.
- God’s Word in the Heart: Have the children make a paper heart and write Psalm 119:11 on it.
- Scroll Craft: Help kids make mini scrolls with their favorite Bible verse written inside.
- Memory Challenge: Create a “scroll race” where kids find and recite short Bible verses hidden around the room.

Encourage the children to love God’s Word like Ezra did, studying it, obeying it, and sharing it with others.
