Introduction: Try This!
Have kids participate in a “strength challenge” using items like tug-of-war or carrying books. Then ask: “Where does true strength come from?” Introduce Samson’s story, how God gave him special strength, and what he did with it.

Bible Story Summary (Judges 13–16)
The story of Samson begins even before his birth. The Israelites were once again under the oppression of the Philistines due to their disobedience to God. One day, an angel of the Lord appeared to a barren woman and told her she would have a special son. This child would be a Nazirite, set apart for God’s work, and he would begin the deliverance of Israel from the Philistines. The woman’s son was Samson.
As Samson grew, the Spirit of the Lord began to stir in him. God blessed him with incredible strength, and he used this strength in many dramatic ways:
- He killed a lion with his bare hands (Judges 14:5-6).
- He defeated 30 Philistines in Ashkelon (Judges 14:19).
- When captured by the men of Judah and handed over to the Philistines, he broke free of his ropes and used a donkey’s jawbone to strike down 1,000 men (Judges 15:14-15).
Despite these victories, Samson often acted on impulse and emotion, making choices that pulled him away from God’s plan. One of his biggest mistakes was falling in love with Delilah, a Philistine woman who was bribed by leaders to discover the secret of his strength.
After several attempts, Delilah finally wore him down. Samson revealed that his strength came from his Nazirite vow, specifically, his uncut hair. While he was sleeping, Delilah cut his hair, and his strength left him. The Philistines seized him, blinded him, and put him in prison.
But the story doesn’t end there.
While in prison, Samson’s hair began to grow back, and he began to humble himself before God. During a great Philistine celebration in the temple of Dagon, they brought out Samson to mock him. Placed between two central pillars, Samson prayed and asked God to strengthen him one last time.
God heard his prayer. With one mighty push, Samson brought down the pillars, collapsing the temple and killing thousands of Philistines, including himself. In his final act, Samson defeated more enemies in death than during his life (Judges 16:30).
Samson’s story is one of great strength and great struggle, showing how God can still fulfill His purposes through flawed individuals when they turn back to Him.

- God gives us special gifts, but how we use them matters.
- Obedience and trust in God are more important than physical strength.
- God is merciful and can still use us after we mess up.
- Our choices have consequences, but God’s plan is always bigger.

- Strength Relay Race: Create a fun course where kids complete challenges that show physical strength, then connect it to spiritual strength.
- Pillar Knockdown Game: Use cups or blocks to represent the temple pillars and let kids knock them down while retelling the final part of the story.
- Samson Story Cards: Use printable cards with different scenes from Samson’s life for kids to sequence and retell in their own words.
